Urgent situations include severe toothache, a knocked-out tooth, broken or cracked teeth, lost fillings or crowns, and swelling or abscess in the gums.
Pick it up by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it (without scrubbing), and try to keep it moist by placing it in milk or saliva until you can make it to the dentist.
You can rinse your mouth with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen, and apply a cold compress to your cheek.
If there’s no pain or bleeding, you may not need immediate treatment — but you should still contact your dentist soon. Cover any sharp edges temporarily with dental wax, if available.
Save the crown or filling if you can, avoid chewing on that side, and call us to come in. Until your appointment, you can use a temporary dental cement or sugar-free gum to cover the exposed area.
