After a tooth extraction, the jawbone can shrink or resorb because it loses stimulation. A bone graft helps preserve the bone volume, maintain facial structure, and provides a strong foundation for future dental implants.
During surgery, after the tooth is removed, a grafting material (which may be synthetic, donor, or autologous) is placed into the empty socket. Sometimes a protective membrane is used, and the gums are stitched back.
Initial healing (soft tissue) takes about a week, but complete bone integration can take 3–6 months, depending on the size and type of graft.
Pain is usually mild. You may feel swelling, tenderness, or bruising in the first few days. Ice packs, soft foods, and prescribed painkillers help manage recovery.
Stick to a soft diet for a few days. Avoid using straws or rinsing vigorously for at least 24 hours to protect the clot. Keep your head elevated while sleeping to reduce swelling. Finish any prescribed antibiotics and follow all post-op care instructions carefully.
